Terms of Service
Last updated September 18, 2026.
These terms cover your use of the Margin Mac app and marginstudy.app. Margin is developed and operated by Alric Siu (“Margin,” “we,” or “us”). Questions? Email [email protected].
Using Margin
Margin is a PDF study app for Mac. It lets you write notes alongside passages, organize ideas in scratchpads, and return to your saved place. These terms govern the license we grant you to use the app. Please read them before purchasing or using Margin.
The current direct-download version requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or newer). Check the requirements for the version you download. Some features depend on the text and permissions available in your PDF.
Your license and trial
The direct-download app includes a 14-day trial. A purchase grants you a license to use the purchased version on up to two Macs that you own or control. Deactivate a Mac before transferring its activation to another. The license is for your use; you may not share or resell your license key.
Margin is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. The price, currency, applicable taxes, and any discount are shown at checkout. A purchase does not promise every future major upgrade or compatibility with every future operating system.
Reading and writing do not require a Margin account. License activation and periodic verification require an internet connection. An activated license supports up to 30 days of offline use after a successful check. Trial and license data handling is explained in our Privacy Policy.
Orders and payments
The seller or merchant of record is identified at checkout and on your receipt. Its purchase terms apply to payment processing, tax, and billing, alongside these terms for using the app.
For an order placed through Paddle, Paddle acts as the merchant of record and authorized reseller, handling the transaction and order-related customer service. Paddle’s Buyer Terms apply to that order. Orders placed through another provider remain subject to that provider’s terms. Contact us for help with the app itself.
Refunds
We offer refunds for technical problems that prevent Margin from working as described and cannot reasonably be resolved, as well as refunds required by law. See our Refund Policy for eligibility and how to request help. Any additional rights provided by the seller of your order also apply.
Your books and notes
You retain your rights to the content you create. Margin does not acquire ownership of your PDFs, notes, or scratchpads. You are responsible for having permission to use the materials you open in the app.
Margin references PDFs at their original locations and saves your study workspace locally on your Mac. Keep backups of both your PDFs and your workspace. Moving or deleting an original PDF can affect the app’s access to it.
Responsible use and ownership
Use Margin lawfully. Do not distribute unauthorized copies, bypass license controls, misuse another person’s license, or interfere with the website or licensing services. These restrictions do not limit activities permitted by applicable law or a relevant open-source license.
Margin’s software, branding, and original website content belong to their respective owners. Third-party software included with the app remains covered by its own license notices. Books linked from our Resources page belong to their authors or publishers and are not included in a Margin purchase.
Support, changes, and your rights
For technical support, email [email protected]. We may update the app and website to improve them or address problems. Features and system requirements can change between versions.
We do not promise uninterrupted or error-free operation or a particular learning outcome. Nothing in these terms excludes a warranty, remedy, or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including your mandatory consumer rights.
We may suspend or revoke a license for a material breach of these terms or after a refund. Where appropriate, we will provide notice and an opportunity to resolve the breach. This does not remove rights you have under applicable law.
We may revise these terms and will show the updated date on this page. Changes will not retroactively remove rights attached to a completed purchase. We will provide any notice or obtain any agreement required by law.
